Camera calibration is important to determine the camera intrinsic parameters (geometrical and optical) and the 3D transformation (position and orientation) between the camera and the world’s coordinate system (extrinsic parameters).

It is a crucial process to extract data (metric information) from images and make decisions based on measurements using real world units. In fact, these parameters can be used to correct lens distortion, measure the size of an object in world units, or determine the location of the camera in the scene. A camera is considered to be calibrated when the parameters of the camera are known.

Controlar developed this Camera Tester to perform camera calibration (and functional tests) on unit cameras. It comes with a test fixture, fully personalized for the customer’s product. A simplified compact version for analyzing the products defects on laboratory, less automated but granting space saving, is also available.

This particular tester is composed of four stations distributed around a controlled rotary plate holding four nests, with the following functions:

  • Station 1: entry and exit of parts to be tested. Here the unit is powered and initialized for the next testing stations
  • Station 2: 2D optical calibration of the unit cameras
  • Station 3: 3D and color optical calibration of the unit cameras
  • Station 4: spare station for future expansion/ new features testing

The automation control of the machine is done through a PLC, which controls the rotation of the rotating plate and each of the stations’ different equipment and fixture. The testing control is done using a PC and a test sequencer software. The rotating movement allows the unit to be placed in the desired position for the tests to be performed.

The nests are capable of holding four units per cycle, one unit per station.

Main Applications

This system was developed to meet the high standards of the automotive industry, which makes it also suitable for other industries, that require calibration of vision systems, or for applications, such as: machine vision to detect and measure objects, robotics, navigation systems, and 3-D scene reconstruction.
