Could you share a bit about your academic and professional journeys up to the positions you hold today at Controlar? How did your collaboration with the company start?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Jo\u00e3o Queir\u00f3s (JQ):\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>My journey began with an academic foundation in Electrical Engineering, which gave me a solid base of technical and strategic knowledge. From there, I started working in the field of test systems, where I gained experience in developing automatic test machines and in client interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over time, I progressed to positions with greater responsibility and leadership, always focused on process optimization and innovation. My collaboration with Controlar started in the test systems department, and since then, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative solutions in testing and industrial automation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Alcobia (CA): <\/span><\/strong>My academic journey took place at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, where I completed my Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Professionally, I have always been linked to the automotive sector, starting as a Test Technician and later as the Technical Lead for homologation testing in vehicles at an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. I was also involved in various activities in the automotive field, including vehicle design and construction, technical inspections, automotive appraisals, and motorsports. In these roles, I specialized in pneumatic braking systems, as well as in measuring noise, vibrations, luminosity, air quality, and thermal comfort in vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside these roles, I was invited to join polytechnic higher education, where I taught at several institutions, and I remain connected as a Coordinating Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. I have also worked with the Portuguese Institute for Accreditation as a lead evaluator and technical expert on various normative standards, which allowed me to acquire a wide network in accreditation and certification of processes, products, and services.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have collaborated with several research units, participating in multiple R&D projects, and I am the author of numerous scientific articles and publications.<\/span><\/p>\n

Entrepreneurial spirit has marked my career, highlighted by the foundation of three companies in different sectors, ranging from primary industries to services and products. My collaboration with Controlar began in 2011 with the establishment of Sensing Future Technologies Ltd. Over time, a close relationship developed, leading to a collaboration in R&D, and in 2013, we established the R&D department at Controlar Portugal with dedicated human resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What are the most impactful trends in the electronics components industry, and what challenges do you foresee in testing these components?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

JQ:<\/strong> In the electronics components industry, miniaturization and increasing complexity of devices are dominant trends, especially in sectors like IoT, smartphones, and electric vehicles. These advances make testing more challenging, demanding greater precision and efficiency. Automotive electrification also requires rigorous reliability and safety tests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, the integration of AI into testing is transforming the process, enabling faster analyses but requiring new skill sets. Key future challenges include adapting to new semiconductor technologies, reducing cycle times without sacrificing quality, and the growing importance of cybersecurity in testing systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Regarding the most significant changes you\u2019ve observed in the industry in recent years, what impact are they having on your work?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

JQ:<\/strong> The most striking changes have been the digitization and automation of the industry, driven by technologies like IoT and AI, which require smarter and faster test systems. Advances in automotive electrification have also brought more rigorous testing standards, increasing project complexity. Which emerging technologies (like AI, IoT, etc.) are shaping the future of testing and automation systems, and how do you plan for their implementation?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

JQ:<\/strong> Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), are revolutionizing testing and automation systems. AI enables predictive analysis, process optimization, and smarter automated testing, reducing cycle times and errors. IoT, in turn, facilitates remote and real-time monitoring of devices, enhancing data collection and test efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

We plan to implement these technologies in an integrated way, with more connected test platforms capable of analyzing large data volumes, providing automatic diagnostics, and optimizing predictive maintenance, ensuring greater reliability and speed in processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Controlar\u2019s approach to innovation in testing and automation systems on a global scale?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

CA:<\/strong> Controlar’s global approach has been unique, as we rely on human resources and internal organization that vary across our production locations, along with distinct installed capabilities. Our global strategy focuses on developing technologically advanced solutions that enhance the quality and reliability of our products, with Continuous Innovation and Sustainability as foundational pillars so that our clients and partners view us as an exceptional innovation partner.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does Controlar collaborate with universities and research centers to foster innovation?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

CA:<\/strong> Since the beginning of the R&D department at Controlar Portugal, we have started to develop and expand our innovation ecosystem, which includes various higher education institutions and research centers. We have agreements with several entities, both at the university and polytechnic levels, to support final projects, master\u2019s theses, and doctoral programs. Over the years, we have also established strong connections with multiple research centers that have been partners in various research projects in which we participate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you identify the most beneficial strategic partnerships for developing new solutions to date?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

CA:<\/strong> The most beneficial strategic partnerships have been those that strengthen our capacity for innovation, enable access to cutting-edge technologies, and expand our global presence. JQ:<\/strong> Our R&D+innovation team prioritizes innovations based on three main factors: market impact, technical feasibility, and alignment with customer needs. We continuously assess technological trends and conduct strategic analysis to identify projects that offer the most commercial value and competitive advantage. Additionally, we work closely with customers to ensure that innovations meet their requirements and solve real challenges. Technical feasibility is also crucial, ensuring that solutions can be developed and implemented efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you foster a culture of innovation, and in what ways do you encourage creativity and risk-taking within your team?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

JQ:<\/strong> We foster a culture of innovation by encouraging open collaboration and creative thinking within the team. We promote constant idea exchange and the exploration of new approaches, without fear of failure. We create an environment where team members feel comfortable experimenting, testing solutions, and learning from mistakes. Additionally, we offer continuous training and maintain close communication with customers to ensure our innovations align with market needs. Risk-taking is encouraged, provided it is backed by strategic analysis and a clear vision of value.<\/span><\/p>\n

How is innovation being used to promote sustainability and ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) practices within Controlar\u2019s companies?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

CA:<\/strong> Our R&D management system is aligned with national and international Innovation, Research, and Development standards, which serves as a crucial tool for using innovation as an essential resource to promote sustainability and strengthen ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. This alignment enables us to coordinate operations and solutions with environmental and social goals, which are increasingly prioritized by clients and the global market. Numerous initiatives stand out, such as Energy Efficiency, Waste Reduction and Material Reuse, the incorporation of Sustainable Materials and Eco-Design, and promoting an Internal and External ESG Culture. This last point includes various measures in social responsibility, inclusion policies, and employee well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n

Controlar has been a finalist in the COTEC-BPI SME Innovation Awards for the sixth consecutive time for its commitment to innovation, financial robustness, and economic performance. How do you view these nominations?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

CA:<\/strong> We regard the consecutive nominations as a finalist for the COTEC-BPI SME Innovation Awards as an important acknowledgment of Controlar\u2019s commitment to innovation and our financial and economic performance. But above all, it is a tribute to all the people who contribute daily to the company\u2019s growth and success. Being a finalist for six consecutive years represents not only a validation of the hard work and innovative strategies implemented but also additional motivation to continue growing in a structured and sustainable manner, maintaining a focus on innovation and creating long-term value.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
